Jan and Hubert van Eyck

Together with Sylvia, my wife, we stood and stared at an amazing work of art in the Sint-Braafs Cathedral in Gent for over half an hour. ‘Het drieluik – de aanbidding van het Lam Gods’. Truly one of the milestones in the history of art.

Almost 600 years ago two highly gifted brothers created this altar piece, which consists out of 12 panels. By means of my ‘museum-headphone’ I get a really detailed explanation about the entire piece. This way I discover the enormous range of beautiful and intriguing details, that I probably would not have noticed this quickly without any guidance. These artist-brothers for instance have depicted 32 different sorts of plants on one of the panels. There are just endless symbolic details incorporated within this amazing piece of art. You could just stare at it for days and still find new things that will touch and inspire you.

Then it strikes me, the real wealth of such an amazing piece of art really gets to you when someone (or for this instance ‘something’) takes you by the hand, takes you on a journey into the masterpiece.

Another thought: I realize that I need to really take my time and need to come to a hold, to consciously be amazed by the wonder of such a piece of art, and to feel how it stimulates me to grow within my own profession towards mastery.
